Condition
The metal surfaces show tarnishing, discolouration and surface scratching, with areas of warmer yellow-metal colour to the pierced gallery. The silver-plated surface may be polished if preferred.
Description
A circular silver-plated wine bottle coaster of shallow cylindrical form, with a solid base surrounded by an openwork pierced gallery and a low spreading circular foot.
The gallery has a continuous repeating pattern formed from elongated vertical oval openings linked by curved metalwork, with smaller geometric apertures above and below. A row of small rectangular openings runs beneath the upper rim.
The projecting upper rim has closely spaced diagonal rope-like moulding around its outer border, together with a narrower smooth inner lip. The lower section is formed with concentric stepped and moulded bands.
The interior has a broad circular base decorated centrally with engraved scrolling foliage, curved leaves, shell-like forms and small cross-hatched panels arranged around a plain circular reserve.
The underside is stamped “PRIMROSE PLATE”, “E.P.O.B”, “SILVER PLATED” and “MADE IN ENGLAND”. These are described as stamped markings rather than confirmation of a particular manufacturer.
Bottle coasters of this type were intended to support wine or other bottles at the dining table while helping to protect the table surface. The form and decoration are consistent with British silver-plated tableware of approximately the early to mid-20th century.
It could also be used as a stand for a suitable bottle or similar table vessel within the stated diameter.
