Condition

The metal surface shows tarnishing, dark spotting, scratches and areas of discolouration. The wooden insert has surface scratches and marks, and the green felt underside has surface marks and adhering fibres. The silver-plated surface may be polished if preferred.

Description

A circular bottle or decanter coaster constructed with a broad silver-plated metal gallery surrounding a fitted turned wooden base.

The upright metal wall has a narrow rounded rolled rim at the top and expands at the bottom into a broad stepped and moulded border formed from concentric rounded bands.

The interior contains a dark reddish-brown wooden insert. This is turned with a raised central circular boss surrounded by several concentric moulded rings, with the natural grain of the timber visible across the flatter outer section.

The underside is also wooden and incorporates a large circular inset of green felt or baize, intended to provide a softer contact surface when the coaster is placed on furniture.

Bottle and decanter coasters of this general form were traditionally used at the dining table to support wine bottles or glass decanters while helping protect the table surface. The combination of silver-plated metal and turned wood was widely used for this type of tableware around the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

It may also be used as a stand for a suitable modern wine bottle or decanter.
