Condition
The silver-coloured surfaces show widespread tarnish and discolouration, with darker areas to the kettle, stand and burner. Localised greenish deposits are present around the burner fitting. The silver-plated surfaces may be polished if preferred.
Description
A silver-plated table kettle comprising a rounded kettle, separate raised stand and spirit burner. The kettle has a broad bowl-shaped body supported on a short circular pedestal foot, with a long tapering spout rising upwards from one side.
The upper body is bordered by narrow parallel bands incorporating repeated small crossed or leaf-like motifs. Similar decoration appears around the lower foot. A shallow domed lid sits within the raised neck and is surmounted by a small fluted, umbrella-shaped finial.
A high arched carrying handle rises above the kettle. The central grip is formed from a thick dark cylindrical material held within silver-coloured metal mounts. The lower supports form elongated scrolling curves with small curled terminals.
The separate stand has a circular upper support carried on four slender curved legs terminating in rounded feet. A lower circular ring supports the spirit burner beneath the kettle. Short chains with removable securing pins hang from opposite sides of the stand, with corresponding pierced fittings around the upper support.
The spirit burner has a squat circular reservoir, domed upper section and central wick fitting with a hinged cap. A horizontal rod projects from the side and terminates in a turned spool-shaped grip.
The underside is stamped WARING & GILLOW and WARING PLATE.
Spirit-heated table kettles of this type were made for serving hot water at the table, particularly for tea service. The form was widely used during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, with the burner allowing the water to be kept warm while the kettle remained on its stand. The form and decoration of this example are consistent with approximately the late nineteenth to early twentieth century.
