A very clean and attractive signed first edition of Lord Denning's The Discipline of Law, published by Butterworths in 1979.
The copy is signed by Lord Denning and dated May 1979, making this a particularly appealing example for collectors of English legal history, twentieth-century judges and signed books.
The book examines Denning's own contribution to the development of English common law, covering subjects including the construction of documents, administrative powers, judicial review, negligence, the doctrine of precedent and the celebrated High Trees case.
LORD DENNING
Alfred Thompson Denning, Baron Denning (1899–1999), was one of the most influential and recognisable English judges of the twentieth century. He became Master of the Rolls in 1962, a position he held until his retirement in 1982. His judgments and approach to the development of common law made him a hugely influential — and sometimes controversial — figure in British legal history.
Denning was also the judge chosen by Prime Minister Harold Macmillan to conduct the official inquiry into the Profumo affair in 1963. His report, published that October, concluded that there had been no security risk arising from the affair and became one of the most famous judicial reports of the twentieth century.
The Discipline of Law appeared for Denning's 80th birthday in 1979 and provides his personal account of many of the developments in English law to which he had contributed. Contemporary legal commentary described his influence on the development of English common law as considerable.
