The T-34/85 was born in January 1944 as a Soviet response to the appearance of the German Tiger and Panther, by mounting on the already proven chassis of the T-34 a new, larger turret armed with an 85 mm cannon capable of competing on equal terms with the German heavy armor. Guard units such as the 22nd Armored Brigade, part of the 5th Guards Armored Corps, participated in the Prague Offensive in May 1945, the last major Soviet operation of the war in Europe, launched to liberate the Czechoslovak capital from the last German forces that refused to surrender even after the fall of Berlin.
