Ink blue is how the sapphire at the center of this ring reads, dense and rich in its depth of color. The word "sapphire" itself traces back linguistically to the Greek "sappheiros," though in antiquity that term likely didn't refer to this stone at all, but to lapis lazuli; today's blue corundum only took on the name in the medieval period. The setting is deceptive too: despite its almost timeless-looking halo of 18 diamonds, the piece was actually made in the 1920s, right in the middle of the Art Deco era. This sapphire thus carries two histories at once – a linguistic one reaching back millennia, and a stylistic one that firmly anchors it in its actual decade.

Returns
