The
Auto Mamiya/Sekor 55mm f/1.4 is
a premium, ultra-fast standard prime lens manufactured in Japan during the late 1960s and 1970s. It is widely celebrated in the vintage film community for its massive maximum aperture, all-metal construction, and signature painterly background blur.
The Tomioka Optical Heritage
Optical historians and collectors widely believe this specific f/1.4 lens was manufactured for Mamiya by Tomioka Optical. Tomioka was a legendary Japanese lens producer famous for engineering some of the sharpest high-speed glass of the era. Because of this heritage, the lens delivers a distinct look: a razor-thin depth of field with a soft, dreamy "creamy" bokeh wide open at f/1.4, which sharpens dramatically into an incredibly crisp image as you stop down toward f/5.6 and f/8.
Key Specifications & Characteristics
- Optical Formula: 7 elements arranged in 5 groups.
- Aperture Design: 6 blades featuring click-stops down to f/16.
- Radioactive Thorium Glass: Like many premium lenses of its time, the inner glass elements are doped with thorium oxide to improve the refractive index and minimize chromatic aberration. Over decades, thorium causes the lens to develop a distinct amber or yellowish color tint. This acts as a natural warm filter for your photos, though you can clear the yellowing if desired by exposing the glass to direct UV sunlight or a UV lamp.
- Build Quality: Solid brass and aluminum construction weighing roughly 315 grams. The manual focus throw is long and exceptionally smooth, which makes it popular for modern video shooters
