Chicago's Staple Singers were already soul royalty by the mid-70s, their gospel roots evolving into a sound that balanced message with irresistible groove. For their collaboration with Curtis Mayfield on the soundtrack to Bill Cosby and Sidney Poitier's film, they turned social uplift into cinematic swagger. The opening cut 'Let's Do It Again' became their biggest crossover moment - supple, seductive and smooth enough to top both the Hot 100 and the r&b charts. 'Funky Love' and 'A Whole Lot Of Love' carry Mayfield's unmistakable touch, all gliding basslines and sensual harmonies whilst 'Big Mac' and 'Chase' close with taut funk and loose, percussive jam energy. It captures a group at the height of their confidence, guided by Mayfield's gift for groove that makes even moral conviction sound effortless.
