Description

A mixed collection of small silver-plated presentation and sporting trophies, together with a number of separate circular pedestal bases. The trophies are of differing designs rather than a matching set and are predominantly formed as traditional two-handled cups.

The largest trophy has a broad deep cup-shaped body with a flared rim and constricted lower section. A narrow geometric border runs beneath the lip, while two large loop handles rise at either side and terminate in curled scroll details.

Other examples include rounded and tapering trophy cups with scrolling, angular and open handles; a shallow dish-shaped trophy with fine scrolling side handles; narrow goblet forms; and several smaller pedestal cups. The designs incorporate plain polished surfaces, vertical fluting, moulded rims and contrasting handle forms.

Several trophies bear engraved presentation inscriptions, names and dates. One larger black pedestal base carries numerous lines of lettering recording names and dates, including the surnames “HIGHWORTH”, “DORCAN”, “SCANNELL” and “HARRIS”, with dates including “1997”, “1998” and “1999”. Other inscriptions are present but are only partly legible.

The accompanying bases are predominantly black and circular, with stepped or moulded profiles of differing heights and diameters. One separate base has a brown wood-coloured finish with a circular metal inset to its upper surface.

Small presentation cups of this general type were widely used by sporting clubs, societies and other organisations during the twentieth century, often being engraved with the competition, recipient or successive winners. Their compact size allowed them to serve as individual awards or commemorative presentation pieces.
