Description

A shallow circular silver plated pin dish made in England and associated with the R.C.C.C. Driving Tests of 1963. The motoring inscription and central car emblem form the principal identifying features of the piece.

The dish has a broad concave centre, low curved sides and a narrow raised rim. At the centre is an applied circular medallion with a black ground and silver-coloured border. It depicts a red motor car in side profile superimposed over a compass motif, with the points marked “N”, “E”, “S” and “W”.

Engraved around the central medallion is the inscription “R.C.C.C. DRIVING TESTS 1963 TEAM F. ADAMS”, identifying the dish as a presentation or prize piece connected with a driving-test event.

The underside is formed with a circular recessed base and is stamped “REGD ‘PLATO’”, “E.P.N.S. MADE” and “IN ENGLAND”. The E.P.N.S. marking denotes electroplated nickel silver.

Small presentation dishes of this type were commonly produced during the mid-20th century for sporting, motoring, club and competitive events, with inscriptions recording the occasion, team or recipient. In modern use it may also serve as a small trinket or desk dish.
