Dance Vision: American Style Smooth—Open Silver Tango Variations is an instructional ballroom DVD from 2004 for dancers working at an open-silver American Smooth level. It focuses on an expressive, showcase-style tango figure rather than a complete closed-position syllabus routine.

What it teaches

The featured variation begins in promenade position and combines:

• A double rondé action

• A hand-to-hand transition

• A lunge and lady’s kick/styling action

• Rotating turns that lead into two press lines

• A fast turning section

• A return to closed hold with a Tango Close

The timing demonstrated is chiefly Slow, Quick Quick groupings, with a sharper series of quicks near the end—giving it the crisp, staccato character expected in tango.

Instruction approach

The presentation is built like a private lesson:

• The instructors first dance the entire variation.

• The man’s footwork is broken down separately, beginning from promenade.

• The lady’s footwork is then shown separately, including the rondé, swivel/kick, turns, and closing action.

• The instructors explain lead-and-follow details: changing handholds, creating distance before the rondé, guiding the lady through the turning/press-line sequence, and reconnecting for the final close.

• It finishes with a demonstration to music.

Why it is “Open Silver”

“Open” indicates that the material uses freer American Smooth choreography—especially separation, hand changes, arm styling, and picture lines—rather than staying continuously in the standard closed ballroom hold. The variation emphasizes projection and partnered shaping: the lady maintains a strong frame through the press lines, shapes up and over the connected arm, and turns quickly to rejoin her partner.

Instructors and use

The lesson is associated with Dance Vision’s American Smooth material featuring Michael Mead and Toni Redpath. It is most useful once you are comfortable with basic tango mechanics, promenade movement, timing, and maintaining balance during turns; it is better treated as a performance or competition-ready variation than as a beginner social-dance pattern. Dance Vision describes its instructional videos as aids for reviewing steps and technique at one’s own pace.
