The 2020 season was a significant campaign for Ho Chi Minh City FC, who entered the year as reigning V.League 1 runners-up and also represented Vietnam in the AFC Cup. The squad featured several notable players, including Vietnam internationals Nguyễn Công Phượng and Nguyễn Huy Toàn, as the club competed domestically and on the continental stage. Kappa supplied the team's distinctive red-and-blue playing range, while a more budget-friendly locally produced stadium version of the Kappa away shirt was also available for supporters in Vietnam, offering an alternative to the higher-specification version. The campaign ultimately saw Ho Chi Minh City finish fifth in the championship group of the reorganised V.League 1 season.
