A particularly interesting copy of Pierre Guyotat's Eden, Eden, Eden, being the First English Edition, published by Creation Books in London in 1995 and translated from the French by Graham Fox, with an introduction by Stephen Barber.

This is the first appearance of Guyotat's celebrated and highly controversial novel in English. The original French edition was published by Gallimard in 1970 and became notorious for its censorship history in France. The English translation first appeared with Creation Books in 1995 and was subsequently reprinted, before a substantially reworked and revised English translation appeared in 2017.

The 1995 edition is therefore of particular interest to collectors of avant-garde, experimental and transgressive twentieth-century literature, as well as readers and collectors of Guyotat's work.

The original French edition of 1970 was issued in a limited edition of 511 numbered copies; this 1995 English edition should not, however, be confused with that limited French issue, and no specific limitation figure has been established for the Creation Books edition.

CONDITION:

Very Good overall.

The book presents well, with the striking original photographic cover featuring the large yellow EDEN EDEN EDEN typography. The covers remain clean and bright with the usual light signs of handling/storage appropriate to a book of this age. Internally, the text is clean and presentable, with the binding sound.

Please examine the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description and show the actual copy offered.

BIBLIOGRAPHICAL NOTE:

The BnF catalogue records this edition as:

London: Creation Books, 1995, 163 pages, translated by Graham Fox, ISBN 1-871592-47-X.

The 1995 Creation Books edition is now considerably more difficult to source than its bibliographical significance might initially suggest. Current dealer listings for copies of this edition are substantially above the price offered here, although such asking prices should not be taken as equivalent to realised auction or eBay selling prices.

A striking and increasingly sought-after example of Guyotat's work, particularly for collectors wanting the original 1995 English translation.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a literary work of considerable extremity and controversial subject matter. It is offered here principally as an important twentieth-century avant-garde literary publication and significant English-language edition.
