The second model in the Canonflex series produced by Canon was the Canonflex RP, introduced in September 1960. Overview of the Canonflex RP

Cost-Reduced Variant: Developed alongside the premium R2000, the RP was designed as a more affordable, budget-friendly version of the original Canonflex.

Fixed Prism: Unlike the original model's interchangeable viewfinder, the RP featured a fixed, permanent pentaprism housing.

Shutter Speed: It retained the top shutter speed of 1/1000 second from the original camera.

Base Wind Trigger: It kept the signature bottom-mounted film advance lever.

How the Fixed Prism Changed the Canonflex RP

The original 1959 Canonflex featured an interchangeable viewfinder system. Changing this to a fixed pentaprism on the RP drastically altered its architecture, aesthetics, and market position.

Lower Manufacturing Costs: Eliminating the complex locking mechanisms required for removable finders allowed Canon to sell the RP at a much lower, more competitive price point.

Streamlined Top Plate: The camera lost the bulky chrome release latches of the original. This gave the RP a cleaner, single-piece top plate.

Loss of Waist-Level Viewing: Photographers could no longer swap the standard pentaprism for a waist-level finder, making low-angle photography more difficult.

Lighter Body Weight: Removing the modular interlocking hardware shaved off weight, making the RP slightly lighter and more comfortable to carry.

Cold Shoe Placement: Because the top housing was now fixed, accessory shoe attachments for external light meters became more secure and less prone to shifting.

This camera comes from a private vintage camera collection.
