An original 1745 Amsterdam and Leipzig edition of The Spectator, 
or the Modern Socrates, the translated continental edition of the celebrated English periodical 
created by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele. First published in London beginning in 1711, 
The Spectator became one of the most influential periodicals of the eighteenth century, 
combining essays on manners, morality, literature, philosophy, religion, and everyday social life. 
Its elegant moral essays helped shape modern journalism and the English essay tradition 
and were widely translated and read across Europe. 
This volume was published by Arkstee & Merkus and features an attractive engraved 
frontispiece and ornamental title-page engraving. The title page is dated M.DCC.XLVI — 1746.
