Description

A military kit bag locking device comprising a large D-shaped metal security clasp fitted with a separate padlock. The principal clasp is formed from silver-coloured metal rod bent into a broad arch, with a hinged straight locking bar extending across the open lower side.

One end of the horizontal bar pivots from a flattened rounded terminal. The opposite end narrows into a flattened tongue which engages with a projecting lug on the other side of the clasp. Beneath this is a pierced metal plate through which the smaller padlock shackle passes, securing the larger fastening.

The attached padlock has a rounded brass-coloured metal body assembled from flat plates with visible riveted fastenings. Its upper section incorporates a dark grey metal shackle. One face has a traditional narrow keyhole and is stamped with the words “SECURE LOCK” arranged in two lines.

The reverse of the padlock is comparatively plain, with the riveted construction clearly visible. The contrasting brass-coloured lock body and silver-coloured outer clasp give the assembly a distinctly utilitarian construction.

This form of large locking clasp was designed for securing the neck or fastening of a military kit bag or similar heavy fabric equipment bag. The construction and style are consistent with military and institutional baggage hardware of approximately the early to mid-20th century.
