Condition

The metal surface has areas of darker discolouration and spotting, particularly to the underside and handle, together with small surface marks.

Description

A small decorative frying pan or skillet of shallow circular form, made from yellow-gold coloured sheet metal. The pan has a broad flat base, low outward-sloping sides and a narrow rounded rim. A long flattened handle projects from one side and terminates in a rounded end pierced with a circular hanging hole.

The interior base is ornamented with an engraved or mechanically incised circular design surrounding a plain central reserve. The decoration comprises scrolling foliage, curled acanthus-like leaves, small flowers and repeated tendrils arranged symmetrically around the field. Fine hatching and closely worked lines provide texture within the individual leaves and scrolls.

The handle narrows towards the pan and broadens at its attachment point into a shaped plate. It is secured to the pan by two round-headed rivets. The reverse is plain, with concentric formed edges around the underside of the bowl.

Small decorative pans of this type were produced during the twentieth century both as functional household forms and as decorative metalware. The pierced end of the handle also allows the object to be suspended for display.

Its shallow form and ornamental interior make it suitable as decorative wall-hung metalware or for display with other brass-coloured domestic objects.
