Condition

The copper exterior has scattered dark spots and areas of uneven colour. The interior lining has a dark grey, mottled surface, and the yellow-metal handle socket has areas of surface discolouration.

Description

A small copper milk pan or pouring saucepan with a straight-sided cylindrical body, open top and flat circular base. The sides taper slightly towards the upper rim.

The exterior is formed from copper-coloured sheet metal with a smooth, reflective finish. The interior is covered with a matt grey metal lining. The base has a broad raised outer border surrounding a flat central panel.

An angular pouring spout is formed directly from the rim. Its pointed channel projects outwards, while a narrow triangular folded section extends down the exterior of the body. Pale joining lines follow the edges of this section.

A single handle projects horizontally from the side opposite the spout. It is secured through a short cylindrical yellow-metal socket with stepped collar details. The plain medium-brown wooden grip tapers gradually towards a rounded end and displays visible longitudinal grain.

Small copper pans of this form were traditionally used for warming milk, melting butter and preparing small quantities of sauce. Copper cookware with lined interiors and turned wooden handles was widely produced during the early to mid-20th century. The pan may also be used for serving small portions or as a kitchen display object.
