Condition

The metal surface has fine scratches and small areas of tarnish. The wooden insert has scattered surface marks. The green felt underside has pale marks and discolouration around the outer edge.

Description

A small circular wine-bottle coaster formed from a turned wooden insert enclosed within a silver-plated metal surround.

The reddish-brown wooden centre has visible grain and is turned with a sequence of concentric raised and recessed rings around a small circular centre. A broader flat band extends around the ringed section.

The metal mount has a solid lower band supporting an upright pierced gallery. The openwork consists of repeated narrow pointed arches beneath intersecting diagonal elements, forming a continuous row of small diamond-shaped openings.

The broad projecting upper rim is decorated with a continuous twisted-rope pattern bordered by rows of small raised beads. The remaining exterior surfaces have a smooth, reflective finish.

The underside is covered with dark green felt. The lower metal edge is stamped “SILVER PLATED” and “MADE IN ENGLAND”.

Bottle coasters were made to support wine bottles at the dining table and to help protect polished surfaces from moisture and marks. The small internal diameter is suited to a narrow bottle, decanter or similar table vessel. It could also be used as a holder for a small plant pot or other cylindrical container.
