Description
A mid-20th-century copper coffee pot of tall, tapered conical form. The vessel has a broad circular base, narrow upper opening, long rising spout and straight side handle.
The body and spout are formed from shaped copper sheet. The spout has a pronounced angular profile and tapers towards an open, diagonally cut mouth. Its lower edge follows the curve of the body, with the joined construction visible around the attachment.
A cylindrical yellow-metal socket supports the long, tapered wooden handle. The socket is secured to the body by a shaped mounting plate with two round-headed fasteners. The wooden grip narrows towards a rounded end.
The shallow circular lid has a copper-coloured upper surface and an internal grey metal collar which locates within the opening. A pointed wooden finial rises vertically from its centre. The vessel has a grey metal lining, consistent in appearance with the tin lining traditionally applied to copper vessels intended for serving food or drink.
The body is impressed beside the handle with an oval mark reading “ARGY” above “EUROPE”.
Published reference material identifies Argy Europe with “Copperware House, London” and records coffee pots, kettles, cream jugs, sugar vessels and trays among its copperware range.
The conical silhouette, contrasting wooden fittings and plain geometric construction are characteristic of post-war domestic metalware. Copper coffee services of this form were made for serving coffee and were frequently accompanied by matching cream and sugar vessels on a circular tray.
