Description

A tall silver-plated sugar caster or muffineer, made in England from electroplated nickel silver. The vessel consists of a hollow pedestal body and a separate pierced cover.

The rounded lower body narrows into a short moulded stem and stands on a spreading circular foot. The foot is formed from concentric stepped and rounded bands with a projecting outer rim. A broad collar defines the upper edge of the bowl.

A tall neck rises above the lower body. Its sides curve gently inward before widening towards the upper and lower junctions. Narrow concentric mouldings around the top form the seating rim for the removable cover.

The deep domed cover has a repeating pierced design arranged in vertical panels. The openings form stylised foliate sprays above paired scrolling motifs, together with pointed, crescent-shaped and curved apertures. The dome rises through shallow stepped bands to a small finial with a rounded horizontally ribbed terminal.

The recessed underside is formed with concentric circular mouldings and is stamped:

“MADE IN ENGLAND
REGIS PLATE REG
E.P.N.S
N 1243”

Sugar casters of this form were traditionally used at the dining table for dispensing finely ground or caster sugar. Pierced pedestal examples were particularly associated with tableware produced during the early and middle decades of the twentieth century. The vessel could alternatively be used as a decorative table container.
