This hand-carved mask comes from the Ivory Coast in Africa.

I found at an estate auction where the family had many African made decor items.  This mask had been hanging on the wall in their den.

It is part of the Goli mask group, commonly used during funerals or festivals to represent the sun and buffalo features.

Typically characterized by a dark finish, intricate geometric patterns and a rectagular mouth.

The circular face is always surmounted by horns, like those of a ram.  These horns connect him to Nyamye, creator god.

There has been some wear to the mask due to age and wear.  I am not sure if the mask had been worn during a Boli celebration or if it was made and sold.  The back has the cut-out to place your face in for the celemony.

This mask measures 26" tall by 15.5" across.
