Tsuyoshi Yamamoto would take an ivory machete to the jungle of Japanese jazz in the 70s, soon becoming one of the key pianists on cult audiophile label Three Blind Mice. Midnight Sun came after his early-70s breakthroughs and is an artefact of notable a stint performing in the US, at which time the Trio had settled into the supple, high-definition sound closely tied to the TBM cabinet. Recorded at Onkio Haus in Tokyo with bassist Tsutomu Okada and drummer Keiji Kishida, the session convects like musical mist through both standards and Yamamoto originals: 'Autumn Leaves', 'Wave', 'My Romance' and the title piece chief among them, wave-folded through by his rounded touch and melodic phrasing. This official Three Blind Mice reissue reproduces the 1978 release in full, newly remastered by Isao Kikuchi and cut by Katsutoshi Kitamura at Mixers Lab.
