Flaxman Low Psychic Detective

The Flaxman Low stories are widely regarded as the foundation stone of the "occult detective" genre. Written by the mother-and-son team Kate and Hesketh Prichard under the pseudonym E. & H. Heron, they first appeared in Pearson's Magazine in 1898–99, introducing a detective who approached hauntings and supernatural manifestations with cool scientific reasoning rather than superstition. Flaxman Low predates Algernon Blackwood's John Silence and William Hope Hodgson's Carnacki, making him one of the earliest and most influential psychic investigators in fiction.

This handsome Ghost Story Press edition faithfully reproduces all twelve original tales, accompanied by the seventy-two evocative illustrations by B. E. Minns that appeared in the magazine publication. Limited to just 200 numbered copies, with an introduction by Richard Dalby and striking cover artwork by Andrew King, it has become one of the most desirable modern editions of this landmark in supernatural fiction.

Widdershins Note: Long before Carnacki lit his electric pentacle or John Silence confronted the unseen, there was Flaxman Low. These stories stand at the very birth of the supernatural detective tradition, where rational enquiry meets genuine terror. An essential volume for any serious collector of classic ghost stories and weird fiction.
