Little, Big

John Crowley's Little, Big (1981) is one of the great masterpieces of modern fantasy—though "fantasy" hardly seems an adequate description. Winner of the World Fantasy Award in 1982, it is a luminous family saga in which the boundaries between the everyday world and Faerie become almost imperceptible. The story begins with Smoky Barnable, who journeys to the extraordinary house called Edgewood to marry Daily Alice Drinkwater, but gradually unfolds into the history of several generations of the Drinkwater family and their mysterious place in an unseen, magical design. Rather than epic battles or quests, Crowley offers something rarer: a novel of enchantment, memory, love and destiny, written in prose of exceptional beauty. It has often been compared with the works of Hope Mirrlees, Lord Dunsany and even Dickens, yet it remains entirely its own creation.

Since its publication, Little, Big has acquired an almost mythical reputation among readers of imaginative fiction. Writers including Ursula K. Le Guin, Peter Straub and Michael Chabon have hailed it as one of the finest fantasy novels of the twentieth century, and it is now regarded as a landmark work of literary fantasy—a novel that rewards repeated reading, revealing fresh layers of meaning each time one returns to Edgewood.

Widdershins Note: Some books tell stories; a precious few cast spells. Little, Big is one of those rare novels whose magic seems to deepen with every reading, inviting the reader into a world where Faerie is never quite elsewhere, only just beyond the next garden gate. A cornerstone of modern fantasy, and one of the true treasures of the genre.
