This composition is part of the orientalist tradition which enjoyed significant success between the end of the 19th century and the 1930s, a period during which North Africa became a major source of inspiration for French painters.
The scene is observed from inside a horseshoe arch door, characteristic of Hispano-Moorish and North African architecture. Two draped silhouettes cross the passage towards a city bathed in light, creating a play of contrast between the shadow of the building and the brightness of the landscape. The architecture evokes the medinas of Fez, of Meknes, of Marrakech or Tlemcen, even certain historic districts of Rabat, without it being possible to identify a specific monument. This could be a workshop interpretation inspired by several trips rather than a faithful topographical view. The composition recalls the architectural framing of Étienne Dinet, while the interest in the play of light and shadow evokes certain works of Jacques Majorelle. The use of characters reduced to simple silhouettes also joins the orientalist tradition of Henri Pontoy. These comparisons are offered for stylistic comparison purposes only.
