German WWI sawback bayonets were specialty field tools featuring teeth on the spine. The S98/05 "Butcher" model was issued as a utility tool designed for combat engineers and pioneers to cut wood, clear brush, and build trench fortifications. Issuance: Only a small percentage (roughly 6%) of Imperial German bayonets featured the sawback feature. Allied propaganda claimed the sawback was designed strictly to inflict gruesome, untreatable wounds. Rumors spread that Allied soldiers would execute any German prisoner found carrying a sawback bayonet. Due to the danger faced by captured troops carrying them, the German Army ordered all sawback bayonets withdrawn in 1917, or had soldiers grind the teeth flat in the field, making this a very rare historic blade.
