Chinese export Porcelain covered bowl finely decorated in elegant Grisaille enamels with
restrained Gilt borders. The bowl exterior is painted with lively pastoral scenes featuring a
water buffalo in a riverside landscape, rendered in fluid monochrome brushwork. The domed cover
is decorated with continuous landscape imagery framed by a gilt scrolling border, typical of refined
Qianlong period export wares.
Collector’s Notes: Grisaille decoration was particularly fashionable during the Qianlong Dynasty, inspired by European engravings yet executed with Chinese brush sensitivity. The water buffalo is a symbol of agrarian life, strength, and perseverance. Covered bowls of this form were used for serving and presentation, and surviving examples from the 18th century are valued for their narrative imagery and elegant simplicity. |
