Design & Glaze Details:
The bowl boasts a highly tactile, speckled beige and cream ground finished with an authentic aged crackle glaze (craquelé). The center showcases an abstract, fluid amoeba or starburst geometric pattern executed in reactive dark-toned glazes. Under direct light, the darker areas reveal a beautiful metallic iridescence or oil-spot sheen, a signature characteristic of reduction-fired metallic oxides from this period.
Condition Report:
Overall Condition: Very Good vintage condition with no visible chips, cracks, structural repairs, or hairline fractures.
Glaze: Beautiful, uniform all-over factory crackle. Minor surface crazing consistent with age and natural ceramic aging.
Base: The underside features the authentic underglaze stamped winged-"T" mark accompanied by the circular "Made in Czechoslovakia" text. The unglazed foot rim shows minor shelf wear and dark friction marks from display, completely typical for an antique item.
Genuine craquelure: The network of fine lines on the light background is craquelure due to thermal aging of the glaze, highly valued in studio ceramics of this period.
Rim of the foot: Minor aesthetic wear from friction and dark marks of use are visible on the support ring, which do not compromise the structural integrity of the earthenware.
Physical Analysis and Proportions
Wavy Profile: The rim of the piece has a pronounced, wavy, "handkerchief"-like design.
Integrated Handles: The handles originate directly from the outer wall of the vessel, bending inwards to secure to the inner rim.
Ring Base: It rests on a low, thick, circular foot that elevates the main body of the ceramic.
Notable Density: Its dimensions (31 cm x 31 cm x 11 cm) and weight of almost 1.7 kg confirm that it is a thick-paste earthenware piece, designed to be a robust and ornamental centerpiece.
Analysis of the Stamp and Dating
The "T" Logo: The letter "T" inscribed within a circle with stylized wings or a crown refers to the Turn-Teplitz plant (now Trnovany, Czech Republic).
Period of manufacture: This marking with the circular text "Made in Czechoslovakia" began to be formally used after the merger of the Urbach brothers with the firm of Rudolf Ditmar in 1919, placing the manufacture of this plate between the 1920s and 1930s. It is a genuine example of the European Art Deco period.
