Received by inheritance. No original packaging.

Antique miniature portrait, a type of artwork that flourished between the 18th and 19th centuries. The central portrait depicts an elegant aristocratic young woman with a classic romantic ringlet hairstyle, pearl necklace, and drop earrings.

Characteristics of the Piece

Composition: This is a bust portrait of a young lady from the 19th-century aristocracy or upper bourgeoisie, dressed in a light blue and white off-the-shoulder gown, and adorned with a pearl necklace and earrings.

Typical Technique: This type of work was traditionally created using watercolor or gouache on thin sheets of ivory, paper, or a rigid support.

Frame: The portrait is protected under convex glass within an oval frame of gilt bronze or brass, decorated with ornamental reliefs and a ring at the top for hanging or wearing as a medallion.

Technical Details of the Piece

Velvet Backing: This type of textile finish on the back was very common between 1840 and 1880, designed to protect the walls or surfaces on which it rested, as well as to conceal the frame's clasp.

Standard Proportions: The dimensions (8.5 x 6.5 cm of painting) correspond to the classic format for pocket or tabletop portraits of the period.

Lightweight: The 82 grams indicate that the outer frame is made of stamped brass or thin bronze, allowing it to be hung easily without damaging the structure.

The Original Purpose of the Miniature

During the Victorian and Romantic periods, miniatures were not painted for the general public or to decorate grand salons. They were private and sentimental portraits commissioned in two main contexts:

Intimate Gifts: They were given to close relatives, fiancés, or spouses as a portable souvenir to take on trips or to wear as jewelry.

Commissioned Portraits: Wealthy families hired local miniaturist painters (called "limners") to capture the beauty and social status of their daughters or wives.

Visual Codes and Fashion of the Era

Although she wasn't a public figure, the painting tells us a great deal about who she was through the artistic conventions and fashion of the time:

The ringlet hairstyle: Waves falling to the sides of the face and gathered at the back were the latest trend between 1830 and 1850, popularized by the Romantic aesthetic.

The pearls and the off-the-shoulder neckline: The dress revealing the shoulders ("boat neck") and the pearls reflect the formal attire of a young, single, or newlywed woman from the upper class, whether for a ball or a formal gala.

The ethereal background: The cloudy, pastel-toned sky is a typical device of the Romantic style, which sought to evoke a poetic and delicate atmosphere around the model.
