SYNOPSIS:Kenneth Duprey's Old Houses on Nantucket documents the structural legacy of the historic island whaling community from early Quaker dwellings to Greek Revival mansions. Ranging from homesteads of 1659 to nineteenth-century whaling-era residences, the chronological survey analyzes five distinct structural eras of Nantucket architecture. Detailed measured drawings, floorplans, and 352 black-and-white plates illustrate features of maritime New England homes, such as the Jethro Coffin House.
Readers gain access to interior architectural elements, including hearth designs, wood paneling, staircases, and historic framing techniques. Many of the documented structures are private residences, making this photographic survey one of the few public records of their interiors.
Architectural Book Publishing Company originally released the study in 1959; this 1986 trade paperback printing reproduces the photographic plates and measured drawings in offset halftones. Historic preservationists and regional historians continue to utilize Duprey's drawings to guide restoration projects in coastal New England.
