Handwoven Q'ero Misa Textile (Mastana) – Traditional Andean Despacho Altar Cloth - Handmade in Cusco, Peru
This authentic Q'ero Misa Textile, also known as a Mastana or Mesa Q'epi, is a handwoven ceremonial textile traditionally used by Andean paqos (shamans) during sacred ceremonies such as the Despacho or Pago a la Pachamama, an offering ceremony that honors Mother Earth (Pachamama) and the sacred mountains, known as the Apus.
The mastana is an essential part of these ceremonies. It serves as the sacred foundation on which ceremonial offerings are carefully arranged and is also used to wrap and protect khuyas (medicine stones) and other sacred ritual tools, helping preserve and carry their spiritual energy.
This beautiful textile was handwoven by artisans from one of the Q'ero communities near Ocongate, Cusco, Peru. The Q'ero people are widely recognized as the living descendants of the Inca and are celebrated for preserving their ancestral weaving traditions and spiritual practices.
The intricate geometric designs woven into the cloth are more than decorative patterns; they are sacred symbols that represent energy and harmony. According to Andean tradition, these designs help hold and channel the spiritual energy of the khuyas, which are believed to receive their power from the Apus, the revered mountain spirits.
Each mastana is meticulously handwoven using traditional techniques passed down through generations. Depending on its size and complexity, a single cloth can take several days to complete, making every piece a unique work of Andean textile art.

PACHAMAMA.- Pachamama ( Mother Earth) in Quechua is the central surrounding motif of the Andean path. The religion of the Andean communities is very much an earth-centered religion. Pachamama is believed to be a vastly intelligent, self-aware being who is both infinitely wise and infinitely compassionate. Andeans in general, and paq'os in particular, pray to her regularly.
DESPACHO - HAYWARISQ'A.- Is the Quechua word for the offering. A despacho is an act of love and a reminder of the connections we share with all beings, elements, spirits, and sacred places. It is an opportunity to enter into the essential unity of all things. A despacho is created during a celebratory ceremony, in the cosmology of the Andes.
