Miniature portrait of Baroness Amalie von Krüdener, reproduced from the famous oil painting by the German painter Joseph Karl Stieler.

Piece Details

The Sitter: Amalie von Krüdener (born Amalie Adlerberg) was a celebrated Baltic-Russian aristocrat, renowned for her striking beauty in the European courts of the 19th century. The original painting is part of the renowned Gallery of Beauties of King Ludwig I of Bavaria.

The Frame: The oval portrait is mounted on an elaborate, rectangular decorative plaque with a tortoiseshell-effect finish in reddish and brown tones, decorated with openwork metal appliqués featuring classical or neoclassical floral motifs.

Origin of the Reproduction: This type of miniature vintage decorative object with convex glass was very popular in the mid-20th century. Renowned companies classified these reproductions, painted by acclaimed miniaturists of the time on various supports, for display in homes. This was a way to bring the art of great museums or the nobility to popular places and homes.

The Artist Behind the Signature

Real Identity: Albert Auguste Fourie signed many of his classical-style works, portraits, and copies of famous miniatures under the name Vely or A. Vely (Anatole Vely).

Specialty: He was a very active artist in the 19th century, recognized for his great technical skill in replicating portraits of the European aristocracy.

The Work in Miniatures: Miniaturists like Vely were often commissioned by art workshops or manufacturers of luxury frames to paint detailed reproductions by hand on supports such as ivory, celluloid, or porcelain. His signature validates that the portrait of Baroness Amalie von Krüdener on your piece was created by a professional miniaturist of the period and is not simply a modern lithographic print.

Historical Context: Bazar Colón

Origin of the Stamp: The oval-shaped light blue sticker belongs to the renowned Bazar Colón, an iconic store selling luxury goods, decorations, and fine arts that was active in the heart of Montevideo, Uruguay.

Historical Location: The label indicates the address Sarandí 602. Bazar Colón inaugurated its iconic and monumental eclectic-style building on the corner of Sarandí and Juan Carlos Gómez streets in 1923 (directly across from the side facade of the Montevideo City Hall).

Meaning of the Label: This store was known for importing statues, porcelain, silverware, and fine decorative objects directly from Europe for Montevideo's high society. The stamp confirms that your Vely-painted miniature was imported, cataloged, and sold through this prestigious bazaar, probably between the 1910s and 1930s.
