Peter Grugeon was a British photographer best known for his formal portraits of the British royal family. Working in association with Camera Press, he produced photographic studies of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip during the mid-1970s, and his work is represented in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, London.
Grugeon’s most celebrated image was a full-length portrait of Queen Elizabeth II made at Windsor Castle on 2 April 1975. The photograph, showing the Queen in evening dress and royal jewels, was released publicly in 1977 for her Silver Jubilee and became one of the most widely recognized royal photographs of the period. Its authority and graphic clarity led to later adaptations by Andy Warhol in his Reigning Queens series and by Jamie Reid for the Sex Pistols’ “God Save the Queen” imagery. Grugeon died in 1980, but the 1975 royal portrait remains the work for which he is chiefly remembered.
