Condition

The silver-coloured surface has tarnish and darker discolouration in places, particularly around the terminal and small bowl. It may be polished if preferred.

Description

A small silver plated cayenne pepper spoon with a long slender shaft, shaped acorn terminal and small shallow bowl.

The handle is narrow and wand-like, with a plain straight stem. One end has an acorn- or teardrop-shaped finial, joined to a turned neck with rounded moulded bands. A flat circular flange sits behind the terminal, giving the upper end a guard-like form.

The opposite end is formed as a small oval or leaf-shaped concave bowl. The bowl is shallow, with raised sides and a rounded end, suitable for taking a small quantity of powdered condiment.

Cayenne pepper spoons were used at table for serving small amounts of cayenne or other strong powdered seasonings. They were generally made as small specialist condiment implements, often in silver or silver plate, and are associated with late Victorian and early twentieth-century table settings.

It could also be used today as a small serving spoon for spice, salt, mustard powder or other fine dry condiments.
