Description
A silver-plated coal-scuttle-form sugar bowl or sugar scuttle, made in silver-coloured plated metal with a bright reflective finish.
The vessel has an asymmetrical scuttle-shaped body, with a lower pointed front lip and a higher swept rear section. The open upper edge is finished with a continuous raised beaded border, following the curved outline of the rim.
The body stands on a short circular pedestal foot. The foot has stepped concentric mouldings and a beaded lower border. A narrow upright handle is fixed to the higher rear section, with a smaller projecting grip to the opposite side. Both handles have raised beaded edging.
The exterior is decorated with engraved foliate ornament, including leaf, frond and feather-like forms with fine incised vein detail.
The underside of the lip is stamped in a circular arrangement. The upper arc reads “HAND ENGRAVED.” The central wording appears to read “BEST,” “SILVER” and “PLATE.” The lower arc reads “MADE IN ENGLAND.”
Coal-scuttle-form sugar bowls were made as decorative tableware, usually for serving loose sugar with a small scoop or spoon. The form copies the shape of a domestic coal scuttle in miniature and was especially popular in late Victorian, Edwardian and early twentieth-century table settings. It could also be used today as a small decorative container for wrapped sweets or similar dry items.
