Condition

There is some left-to-right play at the joint. The metal surface is darkened overall, with areas of brown surface oxidation and variation to the finish. The raised lion’s head decoration and ribbed inner gripping surfaces remain defined.

Description

A hand-operated metal nutcracker formed from two long curved handles joined by a pivoting hinge at one end. The object has a dark brown to blackened metal surface, with warmer brown tones showing on some of the raised areas.

The handles are gently curved and taper from broader decorated upper sections into rounded grip ends. The inner crushing faces near the hinge have opposing ribbed surfaces, formed from vertical raised ridges and recessed grooves.

The hinge is made from interlocking rounded lugs held by a circular pivot pin or rivet. The hinge section is thick and rounded, with a flat circular disc visible on the upper face.

The front section of each arm has raised cast decoration in the form of a lion’s head mask. The design includes a broad feline face, recessed eye areas, rounded muzzle and raised mane-like detailing around the head. The opposing side has corresponding relief decoration, with ribbed and curved elements forming part of the cast head and crushing section.

Nutcrackers of this hand-lever type were traditionally used at the table or fireside for cracking nuts. Figural and animal-head examples were made as both functional household implements and decorative table objects, particularly during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Today, this type of object may also be displayed as decorative kitchenalia or tableware-related metalware.
