Bausch and Lomb makers of the Ray Ban UV Protection Lenses were invented in 1937 to combat the blinding glare experienced by the US Army Air Corps pilots during wartime missions. In WWII, these were also called machine gunner or bullet hole sunglasses used by the American B-17 Flying Fortress crew. Widely used by U.S. M4 Sherman tank crew members.
