Description

A collection of printed theatre ephemera relating to Chess at the Prince Edward Theatre, comprising a larger souvenir brochure and a smaller theatre programme.

The larger brochure has a pale cream or off-white cover with a black border and bold black geometric decoration across the upper section. The lower part is printed with the title “CHESS” in widely spaced capital letters, with “THE BROCHURE” beneath.

The smaller programme has a black cover with white printed lettering. The upper section has a scattered chequerboard-style design formed from small white squares. The centre is printed “CHESS”, with “PRINCE EDWARD THEATRE” below.

The interior of the larger brochure includes colour production photographs, arranged within angular black graphic panels. The photographs show stage performers in theatrical scenes against dark backgrounds.

Several pages contain printed text in multiple columns, including song lyrics or script excerpts. Visible headings include “ACT ONE”, “ACT TWO”, “THE STORY OF CHESS”, “MERANO”, “WHERE I WANT TO BE”, “ONE NIGHT IN BANGKOK”, “THE SOVIET MACHINE” and “I KNOW HIM SO WELL”.

One publication page is headed “SOUVENIR BROCHURE” and is marked “Published by DEWYNTERS LTD, LONDON © 1986”. It also includes “First published 14th May 1986” and “This edition published January 1987”.

Additional printed pages include advertising material, including a “SAAB-SCANIA” advertisement and a page headed “The BENSON and HEDGES SHOP”, with printed reference to “13 OLD BOND STREET, LONDON W1”.

Theatre souvenir brochures and programmes were produced as keepsakes for stage productions, often including photographs, cast or production information, song text, advertising, and publication details connected with a particular run or venue. This example relates to the musical Chess and includes printed material associated with the Prince Edward Theatre production.
