Description

A mid 20th century silver plated EPNS cigarette case of rectangular hinged form, with rounded corners, bevelled edges and a side clasp.

The exterior is decorated with engine-turned vertical panels. The broader panels have a fine repeated lozenge or basket-weave texture, while the narrower bands have a closer wavy or zigzag pattern. Plain raised borders divide the decorative panels.

The front has a rectangular cartouche near the upper centre, engraved with intertwined script initials, appearing to read “LCB” or similar.

The interior is gold-coloured and formed as two shallow rectangular halves. One side is fitted with a yellow elasticated retaining strap held by small metal brackets. The opposite side bears an engraved presentation inscription including “FROM”, “TUTORIAL GROUP” and “1957”.

The inner rim is stamped “MADE IN ENGLAND” and “E.P.N.S.”. EPNS stands for electro-plated nickel silver, meaning a nickel silver base metal with an electroplated silver-coloured surface.

Cigarette cases were widely used in the early to mid 20th century to carry cigarettes in a flat protective container. They were often made with engine-turned decoration, monogram cartouches and presentation inscriptions. This example could also be used today as a small display item or as a case for flat keepsakes.
