Here we have a beautiful and highly decorative Arts & Crafts / Art Nouveau hinge lidded box. This is of the period, dating to c1890-1905. It is an especially attractive example, combining a range of materials to create a richly layered naturalistic design typical of both the Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau periods. The lid is decorated with stylised floral motifs representing blooming flowers and foliage, arranged across a softly hammered pewter ground. The luminous blue-green cabochons, believed to be art glass, form the focal point of the design, while the "mother of pearl beneath" catches the light beautifully and adds depth and contrast to the darker pewter surface. I am unsure if the "mother of pearl" is real or imitation.

A notable feature is the fine border of individually positioned pins framing the decoration, each carefully applied by hand, highlighting the skilled craftsmanship involved in the construction of the box. The pewter has been worked over a wooden carcass, likely cedar. The interior retains the divided sections which are ideal for jewellery, trinkets or desk accessories. The vibrant blue interior finish appears to have possibly been refreshed at some point during the box’s lifetime, though remains entirely sympathetic to the piece and very much in keeping with the peacock tones popular during the period. A perfect addition to any collection of Arts & Crafts or Art Nouveau, Knox or Liberty style interiors alike. It measures approximately 6.75 inches by 5.25 inches by 2 inches. This is the only one on eBay of course so get it while you can!
