One of the last signatures by
Calvin Coolidge. Letter dated Dec. 27,
1932, sending congratulations to George Wilson on the 50th Anniversary of the
Chicago Congregational Club. The content
is routine, but this would be one of his last letters. Coolidge died nine days later at his home
after spending 90 minutes at his office.
Spending less than two hours
at his office during the holiday season suggests Coolidge’s correspondence was
unusually light –even for a retired president whose party was just trounced in
the November elections. This is a nice
signature study example of his autograph late in life when he had been dealing
with several health issues including some fatigue. The signature maintains his
classic figure 8 “C”s but the first name is cramped and the signature smaller
than his more enthusiastic large signatures earlier in life.
