This coin is from a Special Mint Set (SMS). During the years 1965 through 1967, the U.S. Mint in its infinite wisdom (and TOTAL lack of respect for collectors) decided to try to satisfy both mint set collectors and proof set collectors with a single product that did neither. This failed experiment was known as the SPECIAL MINT SET. This set improved on quality from normal circulation production but did not meet the standards for proof production. In other words, their special project miserably failed to satisfy either group of collectors. For that reason, the SMS was a short-lived product, meeting its demise in 1967. However, the production was there for three years, and these SMS halves are a necessary component in any Kennedy half dollar collection. Fortunately, the item being offered here is a nice quality specimen from this awkward period in US numismatics.
