A superb example of a
WW-II German Luftschutz Warndienst
(Air Raid Warning Service)
bevo machine-embroidered
Greatcoat Cuff-title
1943-1945
The Luftschutz Warndienst was a para-military arm of the
German Luftschutz
(Air Raid Protection Services)
drawn from civilian ranks whose role
was to alert the population of The Third Reich
of
impending Allied bombing Raids from 1943 onwards.
Trained in the art of interpreting Luftwaffe communication reports
on RAF & USAAF formations approaching the Reich,
they also
observed bomber formations flying overhead from roof-tops.
In addition to helping operate searchlights attached to the
Luftwaffe's flak batteries they controlled the
German air raid sirens warning of incoming raids
and were
deemed a vital arm of the national Luftschutz operation.
In addition, the L.S Warndienst were often called upon to assist the
Luftschutz Polizei (LSP) help keep order amongst the civil population
during the air-raids, whilst also liaising with the
Technische Nothilfe (TENO)
the German Emergency Technical Service restoring
vital
public services after Allied bombers had left German air space.
Measuring approx 17" laid flat, 2" deep and in an ex-stores condition,
this very impressive white on green cuff-title
was worn on the left arm of the service greatcoat
by all volunteer members of the
L.S Warndienst
In an unissued & untouched condition
this rare example of a German Home Front cuff-title
is another British Army veteran's souvenir 'bring-back'
in the Autumn of 1945.
