They Fought With Pride

Illustrated throughout with black & white reproductions from photographs

The Great War shaped the history of the modern world, its memorials stand in every town and village. The 2nd Battalion The Monmouthshire Regiment played a small part in a titanic struggle as war raged from 1914 to 1918. Many men volunteered to serve King and Country, playing an important and often forgotten role in the war. Its history is fading fast from living memory, no veterans of the Battalion remain to tell their story. This book attempts to place on record the service of men of the 2nd Mons, hoping that future generations will better understand the shocking reality that was experienced by all that served with the Battalion on the Western Front.

In 1914 the Battalion was very much made up of men from Abercarn, Blaenavon, Crumlin, Cwmbran, Llanhilleth, Monmouth, Usk and Pontypool, with its headquarters at Pontypool. The ages and experiences of the Battalion varied considerably from the Boy soldier right through to the veteran of the Boer War. Large numbers of them had worked underground and it was not long before the Battalion became well known for its efficiency in trench building.

The 2nd Mons were one of only a small number of Territorial Battalions to have been granted the 1914 Star. They were mobilised for active service on August 4th 1914 and remained on active service in Germany with the Army of Occupation until May, 1919. They obtained the first Distinguished Conduct Medal to be granted to a Territorial unit. Their honours list is probably as large as any Territorial Battalion. The number of men that served with the Battalion is believed to be 180 Officers and over 3,900 men. As the war progressed the nature of the Battalion changed as the number of dead and wounded began to grow. New drafts filling the ranks often came from other towns and cities.

This story is very much of the ordinary man who served their country on the battlefields of the Western Front. Leaving behind parents, wives, children and loved ones, often never to be seen again or returning with experiences that truly affected them for the duration of their lives. The experiences of those who served will never be truly understood, but I hope this book will provide both an insight and a memorial to those who served with the 2nd Battalion The Monmouthshire Regiment.

Postage & Packaging

I am a bookseller based in the South West of England with many years of experience selling on eBay and shipping books worldwide. Once payment is received, your order will be dispatched on the next available posting day.

My priority is to ensure your book arrives promptly and securely, without damage. Books are first wrapped in strong protective bubble wrap and then placed in a bespoke card book mailer for added protection. Larger volumes and sets are carefully packed in reinforced, hand-cut cardboard boxes to ensure their safe arrival.

As a fellow bibliophile, I fully appreciate the value of a book and treat every order with the care and respect it deserves.

Payment

  • My preferred payment method is PayPal, and it is the only accepted payment option for buyers outside the United Kingdom (i.e., those not residing in England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland).

  • For UK buyers only, I also accept personal cheques and postal orders. If paying by either of these methods, please note that your package will be dispatched only after the funds have cleared, which may cause a slight delay.

Returns Policy

I strive to make my listings as clear and detailed as possible, providing comprehensive condition descriptions and high-quality photographs. When assessing a book’s condition, I tend to underrate rather than overstate to avoid any risk of misleading buyers. However, I understand that, on rare occasions, a customer may not be satisfied and wish to return an item. I am happy to accept returns under the reasonable conditions outlined below.

I am always available to discuss any concerns or questions, so please feel free to contact me if you require clarification or need assistance in resolving an issue.

  • Returns are accepted within 30 days from the date of delivery.

  • Items must be returned in the same condition in which they were received and should be adequately packaged to prevent damage in transit.

  • The buyer is responsible for covering the cost of return postage and packaging.

  • If the above conditions are met, a full refund of the item's original purchase price will be issued; however, the original postage charge is non-refundable.

  • If an item is found to be defective or not as described upon delivery, a full refund including the original postage cost will be provided. The buyer remains responsible for the cost of returning the item.

Book Condition Ratings

As a reputable online bookseller, I adhere to the Independent Online Booksellers Association (IOBA) guidelines for describing book conditions. Below is an explanation of each rating:

  • MINT (M): A flawless, unread book in the same immaculate condition as when it was published. (Note: Very few ‘new’ books qualify for this grade, as minor rubs, scuffs, or bumped corners often occur during shipping or shelving.)

  • FINE (F): Nearly perfect but may show slight signs of careful reading. The dust jacket may have very minor rubbing or slight bumping at the spine ends.

  • NEAR FINE (NF): Approaches Fine but may have a couple of minor defects or faults.

  • VERY GOOD (VG): A used book showing some signs of wear on the binding or dust jacket. Any defects or faults will be noted.

  • GOOD (G): An average used and worn book with all pages intact. Any defects will be specified.

  • FAIR: A worn book with complete text pages (including maps or plates, if applicable) but possibly missing endpapers, half-title pages, etc. (all of which will be noted). The binding or dust jacket may also show significant wear.

  • POOR / READING COPY: A heavily worn book where its primary value is the complete and legible text. It may have loose pages, soiling, staining, or significant damage. Any missing maps or plates will be noted.

  • EX-LIBRARY: Always designated as such, regardless of condition.

  • BOOK CLUB: Always noted as such, regardless of condition.

  • BINDING COPY: A book with complete text pages but a damaged, loose, or missing binding.

Additional Notes:

  • If a book was originally issued with a dust jacket or slipcase, its absence will always be noted in the listing.

  • Any significant flaws, such as inscriptions, underlining, or marginalia, will be mentioned in the description.
