Re Georg Jensen - Georg Arthur Jensen (31 August 1866 in Rådvad – 2
October 1935 in Copenhagen) was a Danish silversmith and founder of
Georg Jensen A/S (also known as Georg Jensen Sølvsmedie). Beginning
with his artistic sojourn into ceramics, Jensen made his first piece of
jewelry in 1899. In 1901, Jensen abandoned ceramics and reinvented
himself as a silversmith designer with one of the most famous names of
his day, Mogens Ballin. With the faith he had in his work he decided to
risk the meager savings he had accumulated to open his own silver shop
36 Bredgade, Copenhagen. Jensen's designs combined fine art with
applied art and his early Art Nouveau designs were a triumph. His
business grew quickly until he had retail shops in a New York, Berlin
and London. His company is still in existence and to this day continues
to produce finely wrought silver designs.
