The H. L. Hershfield Banking House was a prominent financial institution in Helena, Montana, during mid to late 19th century. It was established by Lewis Hershfield, an early Jewish pioneer, merchant, and banker. Lewis Hershfield was an influential figure in the American West during the late 19th century. Born in Utica, New York, in 1836, he ventured westward in the early 1860s, initially settling in Central City, Colorado. There, he engaged in the dry goods business before moving to Virginia City, Montana, in 1864. Hershfield then moved to Helena and founded The Banking House of L. H. Hershfield. The Banking House later became known as L. H. Hershfield & Brother when his brother Aaron joined him. The bank played a significant role in the financial development of the region, providing services to miners and other businesses.
