Black Alice is a suspense novel published in 1968 under the pseudonym Thom Demijohn. The name is actually a joint pen name for acclaimed science fiction writers Thomas M. Disch and John Sladek.

The story is set in the 1960s against the backdrop of the Civil Rights movement. Alice Raleigh, an 11-year-old blonde heiress from Baltimore, is kidnapped for a $1 million ransom. To hide her in plain sight, her captors give her a pill that temporarily darkens her skin and they alter her hair, effectively disguising her as a Black child.Life as "Dinah": She is hidden in a brothel in Virginia, where she experiences firsthand the racial injustices and bigotry of the Southern United States, including encounters with the Ku Klux Klan.

Alice eventually deduces that the mastermind behind the plot is her own father, who orchestrated the kidnapping to steal her inheritance. The novel is described as a satirical thriller that reworks themes from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. It serves as a social commentary on racial perceptions and prejudices during the 1960s, wrapped in a fast-paced mystery.
