Antique British Military Leather Gaiters / Leggings - OTC Regt - Cirencester
Item Overview:
Up for sale is a genuine, matched pair of antique British Military "Short Pattern" leather leggings/gaiters. These are highly characterful pieces of field gear, featuring rare regimental and maker stamps that firmly place them in the early 20th century (likely WWI or the inter-war period).
Key Features & Markings:
• Regimental Stamp: Clearly marked "THE O.T.C. REGT" on the interior strap, denoting issue to the Officers' Training Corps.
• Maker’s Mark: Stamped "MORRIS - CIRENCESTER". Morris was a renowned local saddler/leather worker in Gloucestershire, known for high-quality military and equestrian gear.
• Service Identification: Stamped with service number 259471 (or 239471), providing a fantastic opportunity for genealogical or military research.
• Construction: A robust 4-strap design featuring a "rough-out" mustard-yellow suede body with dark brown smooth leather straps and trim. The center features a ribbed elasticated/canvas section for a flexible, contoured fit.
Condition:
• Leather: The main body is solid with no major tears. The dark leather straps show age-related "crazing" (surface cracking) but remain intact and flexible enough for display.
• Hardware: Original steel/brass buckles show a natural aged patina and oxidation.
• Elastic: The ribbed section remains tight and has held its shape well over the decades.
• Please see all photos for a detailed view of the patina and markings.
Dimensions:
• Standard size for the era; approximately 24cm tall.
A perfect addition for collectors of British Militaria, WWI field gear, or Gloucestershire local history.
