The central theme of the book is Self-inquiry (Atma-Vichara), which the Maharshi presented as the most direct path to enlightenment.

The "Who Am I?" Method: Maharshi urged seekers to constantly investigate the source of the "I-thought". He taught that by questioning "Who am I?", the mind eventually returns to its source, the ego dissolves, and one's true nature as pure consciousness (the Self) is revealed.
Nature of the Self: He emphasized that the Self is eternal, ever-present, and beyond the body and mind. Happiness is described as our inherent nature, found by looking inward rather than in external objects.
Surrender: For those who found Self-inquiry difficult, he recommended Bhakti (devotion) and Saranagati (complete surrender to the Divine), viewing it as another valid means to efface the ego.
Silence as Instruction: Although the book contains his spoken words, the Maharshi often taught through Silence (Mouna), which he considered the most potent and direct form of instruction.

About Sri Ramana Maharshi (1879–1950)

Spiritual Awakening: Born as Venkataraman Iyer, he experienced a spontaneous "death-experience" at age 16 that led to his permanent enlightenment.
Arunachala: Following his awakening, he left home for the holy mountain Arunachala in Tiruvannamalai, where he remained for the rest of his life.
Universal Appeal: His teachings follow the philosophy of Advaita Vedanta (non-duality) and are recognized for their simplicity and universal relevance, attracting seekers regardless of their religious background.
